Host note
CRITICAL NOTE: Café Central is closed for a major renovation from March 2026 until autumn 2026! While they are closed, visit their nearby pop-up concept 'DECENTRAL' at Freyung square in Palais Harrach. Once they reopen, make sure to book a table online days in advance to skip the queue, which easily exceeds an hour.
Why go
Founded in 1876, Café Central was the legendary meeting point for Viennese intellectuals like Trotsky, Freud, and Stefan Zweig. Go for the grand Venetian-styled high ceilings, live piano music, and excellent traditional pastries like the Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel.
